COVID-19 in the Netherlands: tracking its spread

Cases of COVID-19 in the Netherlands and across Europe are increasing again. So far, the rising numbers received surprisingly little media attention. Only in the last day or two, major news outlets started to focus again on the pandemic. Ever since the Dutch public health institute, RIVM, scrapped the daily reports, the public seems to have moved on. Having seen the impact of COVID-19 among family members, I find this worrying.

That’s why I developed a simple COVID-19 in the Netherlands dashboard, using the RIVM’s public data. The data updates daily at around 2pm Amsterdam time. It’s work in progress and not optimized for use on mobile devices. Still, it provides users with an overview of the latest numbers per municipality. The dashboard also shows how numbers developed over the last week. Data on hospital admissions and deaths is also available. Take a look here.

As cases are rising, I hope we can all remind ourselves: this pandemic is far from being over. We should do all we can to bring down case numbers to avoid a second wave. The cold Dutch autumn is coming fast.
